Knowledge Management (KM) is the process
through which organizations generate value from their intellectual and
knowledge-based assets. Most often, generating value from such assets involves
sharing them among employees, departments and even with other companies in an
effort to devise best practices.
KM has become an imperative discipline in most
organizations. The motivation for institutionalizing a KM initiative is based
mainly on two key factors: First, significant increase of productivity, quality
and innovation can only be achieved through the identification, leverage and
optimal use of the intellectual capital existing in the firm. Second,
protecting valuable and intangible assets of the firm has to start with the
recognition, documentation and valuation of such assets in a systematic manner.
